Commerce township pedestrian bridge1/7/2024 ![]() ‘The former railroad right of way is being converted into a non-motorized pedestrian pathway from Napier Road to Haggerty Road which will be known as the Airline Trail,’ said MDOT Metro Region Communications Representative Diane Cross. This new bridge will both connect the trailheads and serve as a gateway from the south into Commerce Township. The former Airline Railroad, which ran through Walled Lake, Commerce Township and Wixom, is in the process of being converted into a nature, walking trail for residents. ‘I imagine the bridge will be the pathway to many a fun run, bike excursion, bird watcher, and photography fan for generations,’ said Scott. The bulk of the $4 million project is being grant funded by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Department of Transportation, according to Commerce Township Supervisor David Scott. The Michigan Department of Transportation is currently in the planning stages of building a pedestrian bridge over M-5 in Commerce Township, just north of Maple Road. A new non-motorized, pedestrian bridge will connect three Oakland County communities.
